Bogotá police negotiate damages for graffiti artist murder days after Bieber graffiti scandal
Bogotá police – enduring criticism for protecting Canadian rock star Justin Bieber while he spray painted graffiti on a Bogotá wall – offered compensation to the family this week of a Bogotá graffiti artist murdered by police.
Police gunned down Diego Felipe Becerra,16, in August 2011 while he painted a Bogotá wall. Police tried to paint him as the perpetrator of robbery. But it was shown that Becerra was shot in the back at close range and was unarmed.
Becerra´s family was offered some 500 million Colombian pesos as compensation, about $272,000 Cdn.
Controversy raged this week after Colombians witnessed their police force protecting the privileged Canadian rock star while he painted a stylized Canadian flag – with a marijuana leaf replacing the maple leaf – while guarded by a team of Bogotá police.
For many Colombians the Bieber graffiti case has come to represent the privilege foreigners receive in Colombia while locals face persecution in their own country.
