FARC graffiti an unsettling sight for Semana Santa celebrations

Popayán´s continuing graffiti battle took an ominous turn Wednesday when the initials of the country´s largest guerrilla army were painted outside a Red Cross station, near the cordoned off Semana Santa celebration site.

FARC graffiti often precedes guerrilla activity or attacks. And after a half a century of internal conflict, there are many of the people have suffered at the hands of guerrillas.

Popayán has been the site of a paint war, with activists painting anti-government and anti-capitalist messages on the city´s white colonial walls as others paint over the messages in preparation for religious celebrations.
