Assassination attempt against Colombian union leader fails
Violence against Colombian union leaders continues with weekend attack in Cali.
Luis Miguel Morantes, president the Confederation of Workers (Central de Trabajadores de Colombia) was in a vehicle which was fired upon in a shooting on Sunday in Cali.
According to Human Rights Watch more union leaders are killed in Colombia than in any nation on earth.
Fewer than 10 per cent of attacks result in convictions.
Colombian trade unions are under attack from a variety of sources. Threats have been received not only from organized crime, but from the FARC, Colombia´s largest guerrilla organization, currently in peace talks with the national government.
“None were injured and they [security guards] were able to repel the attack,” according to a press release by Colombia´s Interior Ministry.
